MA Sheet Metal Licensing Law

Effective February 2011*, Massachusetts will require all sheet metal workers to be licensed. This includes, but is not restricted to, all companies that perform sheet metal work including duct work fabrications, installation, roofing, HVAC installers, duct balancers and duct cleaners, and architectural sheet metal watershed roof systems.

Businesses
  • Corporations: Required to have at least one master sheet metal worker as a corporate officer, and shall designate a master sheet metal worker to be its responsible craftsman
  • Partners in a Partnership or LLP: Must be licensed master sheet metal workers
  • LLC: Each must designate a master sheet metal worker as the Manager and Responsible Craftsman

Workers (one of the below required based on work experience)
  • M 1 Unrestricted Master
  • M 2 Restricted Master (buildings under 10,000 sq feet)
  • J 1 Unrestricted Journeyman
  • J 2 Restricted Journeyman
  • A 1 Unrestricted Apprentice
  • A 2 Restricted Apprentice

Costs
  • Master Unrestricted/Restricted = $175
  • Journeyman Unrestricted/Restricted = $155
  • Apprentice Unrestricted/Restricted = $65

Licenses must be renewed every two years.
The Grandfather Master Sheet Metal Worker License is eligible to those that apply before February 19, 2011 and fall within any of the three categories below:
  1. You have been an officer of an incorporated sheet metal company
  2. You have completed at least three years of personal professional practice at the Master's level in the field of sheet metal work
  3. You have 10 years of total sheet metal experience
Once MA sheet metal workers will be considered a licensed trade, they are to follow the International Mechanical Code and portions of the MA Building Code 780 CMR.

Effective February 19, 2011*, permits to perform sheet metal work in buildings owned, used or leased by the Commonwealth must be submitted to the Board.
All applications are available at the Division of Professional Licensure for sheet metal workers.

* Although February 19, 2011 is the current effective date for Commonwealth municipalities, the permitting process could be implemented prior to that date.
