Not all roofing is created equal. Have you heard of a cool roof? These roofing shingles contain highly reflective paint, a sheet covering, or reflective tiles. Cool roofing reflects more sunlight and absorbs less heat, keeping your home cooler in the summer. And who wouldn’t want their home to be more energy efficient?
Solar Heat Gain
Roofs without cool technology can reach temperatures of 150°F or more on a summer day, according to energy.gov. A cool roof minimizes the solar heat gain of a building by first reflecting incoming sun rays and then by quickly re-emitting the remaining absorbed portion. With cool roof technology, your home could stay more than 50°F cooler. In addition, decreasing the temperature of your roof may also slow shingle deterioration, potentially making your roof last longer.
Several manufacturers make a solar reflective, energy efficient cool roof for residential homes. Previously, lighter-colored or white shingles were the material of choice when designing a cool roof. GAF and CertainTeed now incorporate highly reflective ceramic granules on their cool roof shingles and offer color options in addition to white.
